For a sheet rocked opening we recommend the door height be 1 2 larger than the opening.
Barn door height requirements.
To start measure the width of your door opening from outside molding edge to outside molding edge and add 1 inch or more on each side for overlap.
To have privacy the door usually overlaps the opening by an inch so that a 2 6 opening will require a 2 8 door.
For the height of your barn door we recommend at least a 1 overlay.
Generally most standard barn doors are approximately 36 x 84 or 42 x 80 with enough extra lip to overlap most standard door frames 36 x 80 by an inch or so.
Add 1 to 2 per door for overlap depending on privacy needs.
Measure across for the width and from the top of the casing molding to the floor for height.
Next you ll want to determine the height you want your door to be.
We recommend 1 1 2 to 2 of overhang on each side.
Measure from the header to the floor to determine the door length you need.
Barn door measuring guide for door openings with casing molding.
In this example the total height is 80 once mounted the door will hang 1 off the floor which will add the bit of coverage you need at the top of the opening.
To figure out what size track you need double your final width measurement.
Measure the height of your door opening from the top molding edge to floor.
Most barn door sizes fall anywhere between 36 wide on the shorter side by 96 tall on the longer side.
For instance if you have a doorway that s 35 you ll want a track that s at least 70 although a safe 6ft.
Once you ve established your desired door size.
30 opening 34 wide door.
For the door height we recommend measuring from the floor to the top of the opening.
Always remember that your barn door railing system should be at least double the width of your door frame possibly longer if you have an odd shaped door.
72 would probably be even better.
Again for doorways with moldings measure from the top edge.
Ideally the door will cover 2 to 3 inches beyond the opening on each side.
For example if you have an 83 opening you would order at least an 84 barn door.
Remember barn doors need to slide at least as far as the opening in one direction or the other.
Measure from outside to outside of casing molding.
For example if you have a 30 opening you would order at least a 34 barn door.
Structural support is required barn doors can be heavy up to 200 pounds or more so for sturdiness most people mount the track to a header attached to the wall studs above the doorway.
