Mark the area where the mantel will be and drill a pilot hole in each stud in the center of your 6 space.
Bolts should be long enough to cover 2 3 of mantel depth the thickness of the backer board.
Screw lag bolts through the backer board and into the back of the mantel.
Remove the old mantel.
Locate the studs and mark.
Caulk the seam and allow time to dry before using.
Remember to take into consideration your measurements so you know where to mark your holes top to bottom and side to side draw holes onto your mantel then using a wood spade bit slightly larger than your rods drill your holes.
Drill pilot holes into the template board not attached to the wall at this point at the locations of the studs.
Screw in your lag screws about 3 1 2.
Hold the mantel above the fireplace at the height you wish to mount it at least 6 inches away from the firebox.
Using your template place the 2 4 onto the mantel and level it with a long level.
